Working on The Boundary

Structure of The Masterclasses
The programme is divided into two parts.
Part 1: 9am – 1pm
Andrew as Master Coach will:
- Explore the four steps to managing professional clients who may have a mental health problem.
- Use video clips to aid understanding and explore real life cases.
- Discuss and debate the underlying professional issues.
- Show how “What to do?”, as a question, focuses on a positive outcome without the need for diagnosis or attempts at treatment.
Part 2: 2 – 4.30pm
Facilitated Peer Practice Groups
This is your opportunity, in a small facilitated peer group, to discuss the impact of the Master Coach input on your own theoretical and philosophical approach.
There will then be time to practice coaching supervision with some of the techniques and methodologies that have been illustrated by Andrew.
The Masterclass Subject
All codes of ethics and best practice state the need for the coach not to work beyond their individual competences and to refer any clients who need the help of a mental health specialist such as a doctor or therapist.
But coaching is a powerful psychological intervention and many clients will behave unusually and feel challenged during the process.
How does the coach recognise when this client has a potential mental health problem and not just an unusual personality? In this Masterclass I will focus on the key question of “what to do?” This avoids any need to try to attempt a diagnosis as “what is wrong?” becomes unnecessary. What to do for the client, the coach, any third party, the law and society as a whole – so that the needs of all are most likely to be met in a safe and professional manner.
“What to do?” has four components that will be covered during the day.
- An awareness that some people will have temporary or more permanent mental health issues that may impact on coaching.
- An ability to recognise the signs and explore with the client what may be happening.
- The need to reflect on the ethics, legalities, practicalities and circumstances before…

Biography:
Andrew Buckley is an accredited counsellor/psycho-therapist, executive coach and team development specialist. He is accredited by the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy and certified by, and a member of the training faculty of, the William Glasser Institute.
He sits on the 12 member national Coaching Forum hosted by the BACP and is working towards a Doctorate in professional coaching and mentoring practice at Oxford Brookes University.
His first book - A Guide to Coaching and Mental Health, The Recognition and Management of Psychological Issues, was published by Routledge in September 2006 as one of the Essential Coaching Skills and Knowledge Series.
