Manager as Coach

Overview

A 2½ -3 day AoEC programme to develop the ability of managers at all levels to support performance through structured coaching conversations.

Who is it for?
This is for organisations who want to equip their line managers with the skills needed to demonstrate a more facilitative style and to get the best out of their people through a balanced use of active support and constructive challenge.

It is designed for managers with little or no coaching experience. It is particularly suited to those who have been promoted on the basis of technical expertise or who have otherwise become used to advising and directing more than delegating and supporting..

What does it deliver?
The programme provides managers with a range of coaching knowledge, tools and techniques to help them to release the potential and maximise the performance of individuals and teams. Participants will

  • Experience and understand the uses, benefits and disadvantages of different styles of managing people
  • Recognise their own preferred style
  • Develop their facilitation skills and their ability to conduct supportive and challenging coaching conversations with their people
  • Be able to use the skills learned and their 'manager as coach' style immediately, back in the workplace.

Scope
The programme ensures an understanding of the uses of a coaching style and covers the essential steps for conducting an effective coaching conversation

  • Clarifying the purpose, goals and nature of coaching
  • Structuring a session
  • Developing and maintaining the coaching relationship
  • Focussing others on the achievement of their goals
  • Encouraging learning and self-understanding
  • Supporting self-responsibility
  • Supporting others through change

Style
The design of this two day plus a half / one day programme is highly experiential and is adjusted to suit the needs and experience of participants. It teaches basic coaching practice, skills and the GROW model which are practised in coaching triads with coach, coachee and observer.

The overall process is designed to enable coaches to experiment, to accept challenges, to develop skills and to deepen their understanding about how they can use coaching to get the best out of their people..
